About

Nicole Irene Anderson's paintings depict complex environments where reality and unreality converge. Working on panel, canvas, and paper, she combines painting and drawing media to create intricate, painterly surfaces where she juxtaposes thick paint, textured washes, and delicate graphite drawing. Her subject matter revolves around evocative, melancholic landscapes and enigmatic, figurative imagery. Her treatment of scale is deliberately arbitrary and non-perspectival, and often alludes to different time zones or planes of existence. Some recurring themes are: the technological sublime, humanity's efforts at figuring out how to be human, doubt, empathy, and the creation of history.
