Blasted Art Gallery, "Nicole Irene Anderson / Avery Caauwe"

Whistleblower (2017), Oil, casein, and graphite on panel, 32 x 46 inches

Whistleblower (2017), Oil, casein, and graphite on panel, 32 x 46 inches

Two Sonoma County artists address contemporary issues, including the advancement of technology, the fate of the environment, the role of corporate structures, and the shape of our future world. Anderson combines painting and drawing to create landscapes and narratives where reality and the surreal coexist. The inventive color palette, tactile surfaces, and webbed patterns of Caauwe’s paintings provide the basis of his visual conversation about the impact of technology and artificial intelligence.

Note from the Juror - Drew Bennett,
Artist & Founder of the FaceBook Artist In Residence Program

The art that matters most to me is art that is most clearly a document of its own coming into existence. That is, the line between intellectual and/or emotional concept to physical actions enacted on the materials to final resting place, or finish work, is expressed directly as the final document.

Those ideas/emotions can be belabored or miraculous, that physical process of exercising the psychic beginning can also be meticulous or improvisational... whatever the case, the authentic, resonant examples of art in my life are documents of this baseline process.

The artists in this show have a wide range of psychic backdrops, physicality's enacted, and materials used to arrive at their finished work, but each finished work presents an honest and direct engagement with what I believe it means to walk the line as an artists.

I believe this breath of work has substantial emotional, intellectual, physical, narrative, and aesthetic oppositions, arguments and disagreements within itself, but that each work is strong enough on its own to be made stronger by this discourse, as that discourse is what its all about.
